Meet Dr. Emily Trohatos
Emily Trohatos
DDS, MSc, FRCDC (Ortho)
If you ask Dr. Emily Trohatos what she does, she says “I’m an orthodontist.”
If you ask her, “what does that mean?”
She says, “I build smiles.”
Dr. Emily Trohatos is an accomplished and seasoned specialist in the field of orthodontics and the founder of Orthodontics on Danforth.
From a young age, after undergoing her own personal experience with orthodontic treatment, Dr. Trohatos knew that this field was where she belonged. Dr. Trohatos graduated from the University of Toronto with her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS). She practiced general dentistry for a couple of years, with the ultimate goal of becoming an orthodontist. She went back to school shortly after for specialty training in orthodontics. In 1999, she graduated with her Master of Science (MSc) Certificate of Proficiency in Orthodontics from the University of Manitoba.
At the time, working in the field of orthodontics was a narrow fork in the road. The options were to practice under someone or to be daring and create a practice of your own. That is exactly what Dr. Trohatos did. She knew she wanted to create a practice for the community, one for families to come to, a practice in which she could deliver care to any and everyone who walked through her doors. So, she decided to create her practice right out of school. Orthodontics on Danforth was founded in 1999.
One of her mentors who saw a special light in her gave her advice that stuck with her. He told her she didn’t need much, just a couple of chairs and people would come; and so, they did. Fast forward over 20 years later, Dr. Trohatos is a well-known practitioner on the Danforth.
Remaining at the forefront of the latest treatment options available in the industry, Dr. Trohatos takes a comprehensive approach. She combines field expertise, fine-tuned skill, and strategic planning, with her passion for building smiles. She carefully and skillfully creates a customized treatment plan for each patient. No smile is the same, therefore each treatment plan is curated specifically for each patient so that their smile can be optimally built for them. Every future patient has this quality of care to look forward to.
When Dr. Trohatos is assessing a patient, it’s like watching magic unfold. She’s in the zone reading the patient’s mouth like a book with all of the secret codes and magic words. It’s not just about straightening teeth and getting them from point A to B. Dr. Trohatos is anticipating potential challenges and deviations that may arise, figuring out the mechanics in her head to create lasting clinical results, planning what it will take to help and maintain the stability of the teeth, paying attention to the myofunctional therapy aspect for the patient, and doing all of that in the most efficient and comfortable way possible.
If you ask her what her favourite part of her job is, she says it’s the physical and emotional transformation that she has had the privilege of seeing first-hand and being a part of for all of her patients. “Seeing the change, seeing their transformation. It’s all about seeing people’s confidence build,” she says. That’s where the heart of Orthodontics on Danforth’s vision comes from. “Own your smile with confidence.”
Results speak for themselves. Dr. Trohatos has even started treating the children of her previous patients. “Dr. T” has become a household name in the community.
“It’s not about the teeth, it’s about the smiles.”
